People & Places: San Pedro Yosotatu is a small community of about thirty farmers of the Sierra Mixteca cooperative, in the rugged mountains of Oaxaca. Farmers grow older coffee varieties here, use more traditional farming methods, and cultivate small parcels of land. Yucuhiti lies in the central expanse of the greater Mixteca region. It is one of the highest altitude growing regions on the state. The coffee trees grow under managed shade canopy, and harvest peaks around February. Each farmer manages about 1 or 2 plots, about 2-3 in hectares total. They pick their own coffee, and practice small scale processing methods. They value traditional and sustainable farming practices, and incorporate worms and other earth composting methods to care for the soil.
