Yabitu Koba
$17 - 12oz

Super juicy and intensely sweet with fruit forward notes of ripe peach, nectarine, and mandarin orange.

Grown in the highest coffee region of Ethiopia: the forests of Uraga, in Guji. Here, soaring elevations exceed 2,300 masl, and traditional harvest methods mirror more of a “foraging” agro-forestry approach. The coffee trees which grow under the canopy are local landrace, or heirloom, varieties, which have evolved and adapted in the regional forests over long periods of time, pre-dating the introduction of coffee outside of the East African Rift. The trees produce less cherry than garden style or higher input farming methods. The low production volume is a result of forested shade and minimal intervention. The production may be low, but the coffees are stunning.

Sourced from the Hana Asrat Washing Station, which is located in the Yabitu Koba Village of Uraga. About 720 farmers deliver to this wet mill. Cherries are picked in the morning, and is depulped in the afternoon. After depulping, the cherry is fully washed via a 1-2 day fermentation; then soaked for a few hours before being dried drying on raised beds. With such a clean profile, the character of the forest coffee truly shines through.

Kalico

Sweet fruit notes of stone fruit, dried mango, dried dark fruit, and spice.

Kahawa Link Company (Kalico, for short) is a network of washing stations in Burundi’s northeastern regions of Kirundo and Muyinga, owned and operated by Angele Ciza and Consolata Ndayishimiye. Angele was the first woman to purchase coffee farms and washing stations after the government relinquished control of the coffee sector in 2009. Kalico has since grown to 7 washing stations which collectively purchase coffee cherry from over 25,000 farmers in specific communities throughout Kirundo and Muyinga. This lot represents hundreds of farmers who deliver ripe coffee cherry to two of Kalico’s washing stations, Muramba and Murago, where it is bulked into community day lots, washed, and dried on raised beds. Harvest in the region peaks in May and June.

Smooth and silky with notes of spiced sweets, preserved dark fruits, and honey with a light pop of fresh red berry.

The brand new Impexcor-Busanze coffee washing station serves about 2,000 farmers in Nyaruguru, an area in Rwanda’s Southern Province. Producers harvest their own coffee and then deliver the ripe cherry to the wet mill to be bulked into community day lots to be washed, and dried on raised beds. This specific lot represents a number of producers who contribute to the washing station, and placed 7th in Cup of Excellence, which is exciting since this is the mill’s first harvest season! Now, with the advent of the new wet-mill, the community’s farmers have access to a nearby washing station, which allows for this specific area’s coffee to be kept separate, and ultimately celebrated for quality. Remera washing station is one of several wet mills owned by Epiphane Mukashyaka, her son, Samuel Muhirwa, and their family. Epiphane is incredibly important to the recent history of specialty coffee in Rwanda. She and Samuel have been prominent and influential figures in the specialty coffee sector for the past couple of decades. Remera, Epiphane’s first washing station, now serves about 500 registered farmers who work small, garden style plots in Kamonyi, in Rwanda’s southern hills. Harvest here peaks in June. The farmers deliver coffee cherry to Remera where it is bulked into community day lots, then washed, and dried on raised beds.
